2019: A Year in Review

Happy new year! We have officially survived a full decade and the first full week of 2020. In just ten short days I have been a busy bee, laying down some intense groundwork. Groundwork that I have either neglected or never thought to do before (perhaps a combination of both), to make sure that 2020 is a year that propels these blogs, and your experience as the reader, forward. But before I get ahead of myself, I have to address 2019.

So 2019 was a year of highs, a year of lows and a year of breakthroughs: I experienced a break up that, for the first time, resembled a divorce more than your usual break-up, I got into the habit of posting more consistently on the blog, I did my first collaboration with a blogger I absolutely admire, I also did my first giveaway with said blogger, I attended some of my first networking events for my blogs, and I became a brand ambassador for a local business I adore.

Despite my painful break-up, one thing I remember my ex telling me was if blogging was my passion, I needed to feed it, not starve it. It was remembering that conversation that I had an aha moment: Why wasn’t I investing in my passion? Was I not as passionate about my blog as I thought? What was I afraid of?

So a bit of thought journaling, a weekend getaway to California, and a vision board later I realized that I would have to put aside my fears and put in the work if I want to create a better Keeping Up with the City.

How to Save Money (And Still Shop Local)

By now, I’m sure all of you know that I love shopping local, but I would be lying if I said I’m made out of money. Because I’m totally not. I feel like I make a decent income for someone my age, but I still think like a broke college girl when it comes to shopping: I try to avoid paying full price for anything and have various rebate apps on my phone. Unfortunately, these rules don’t always apply when you’re trying to shop local, but it’s certainly not impossible to save a buck here and there. And I–or should I say we–are going to show you how.

I collaborated with my dear friend and fellow blogger, Annie Austen to put together the most comprehensive guide we could to help you save money while still shopping local and just in time for the holidays! There are a lot of amazing makers and businesses out there that are pretty affordable and if you can beat the big box prices while putting money back into your local economy it’s a win win. Hope you enjoy our picks!

Laundry Wash Soap

Washing up with Indigo Wild (laundry wash)

Since I recently went on a clothing bender, which includes my clothing haul at Do Good Co.’s Yard sale, I figured that I should probably make a point to take care of my new (and slightly used) threads. Sure I wash my clothes, but, A. my laundry wash is from Wal-Mart and isn’t exactly local (branding and all) and B. I don’t even know what’s in my detergent. The ingredients aren’t, in fact, listed on the bottle, you’re generally referred to the website if you are wanting to know what’s in your detergent.

The ingredients in my current laundry detergent

While the ingredient list isn’t particularly long (at least it isn’t if you use Arm & Hammer like I do), but it is filled with lots of ingredients I can’t pronounce. Not to mention that your commercial detergents are made with petrol-chemicals which are often linked to various health problems, including, respiratory issues, skin irritation, even cancer.

While it seems weird to care about what you wash your clothes with, consider which products you use when you’re in the shower.  The bottom line is, if your conscious of what you use to shower with, it might be time to consider what you wash your clothes with too. Your skin is your largest organ and you live in your clothes on an every day basis. With that thought in mind, I scoured the city for a laundry detergent that would be a little healthier/safer, eco-friendly and locally made.

Back from the Dead Part 2: On going through Puberty…Again

NOTE: If you haven’t read part one of my “Back from the Dead” series, I highly recommend it. You’ll probably be less confused.

Yep, that title is correct and I likely just blew your mind. Don’t worry, I felt the same way too when my therapist told me that it’s very normal to gain weight at my age. But…I thought that was what the freshman 15 was in college? Well kind of, but there is way more to the whole freshman 15 phenomenon than we’ve all been led to believe (this article from Cosmo is likely to clear up how the female body changes throughout your 20s). For most people that know me, or if you’ve ever met me, you are likely to wonder why gaining weight is such a big deal (I’m 5′ 7″, athletic build, approx. 150 lbs just to give you an idea).  And the answer is, nothing really, but most women are freaked out to find that they’ve gained weight especially when you look in the mirror and don’t notice anything alarmingly different about your body.  More than anything, it’s incredibly frustrating to go to put on a pair of shorts you bought a year ago only to find they don’t fit you anymore.

Boulevard: Summer Brews to Beat the Heat

IMG_20190805_183655We all love summer for some reason or another; school’s out, music festivals, patio drinking (my personal favorite)—but we all hate summer for one good reason: it’s WAY too hot. While we may be heading into August and the subsequent end of summer, we all know that the temperatures in Kansas City likely aren’t to drop until at least mid-October. And since the temperatures are going to rise well before they drop, it’s only right to cool off with an ice cold beer and of all the beer I drink, Boulevard Brewing Company is an easy a go-to choice: they’re local and they make some damn delicious beer. In fact, Boulevard has come up with so many beer concoctions since its 1989 inception, including the recent introduction of Fling cocktails, it’s hard to say which brews are my favorite, but I have curated a little list of beers that I have enjoyed drinking this year, along with a bonus or two, that are sure to leave you feeling refreshed through the remainder of summer.

Kansas City Noir: Escaping to the Familiar

Kansas City Noir book

Kansas City Noir, edited by Steve Paul and published by Akashic Books

My birthday has come and gone and we are quickly heading into August, which means that beach and poolside insta photos are becoming far more frequent. For some reason as we get older, the appeal to actually get in the pool, goes down and the appeal to sunbathe near the pool with a good book goes up. Whether you’re sitting poolside at the neighborhood pool or oceanside on a summer vacay, sometimes it’s nice to view your hometown in a new way.

The Brewkery: Reaching Booch-phoria

I hate kombucha. At least, I thought I did. It all started with a little sip of my sister’s Target brand kombucha. To my surprise, I actually liked it, a stark contrast to the kombucha my dad made me try–acidic, kind of like drinking straight vinegar. Since trying my sister’s kombucha, I started looking into getting into the “Booch craze”, and stumbled upon The Brewkery; a kombucha tap-room nestled in my own neighborhood. However, before we get to the fun stuff, allow me to give you a brief overview of what kombucha even is.

I've fussed with colors and fonts and layouts for the past 6 months convinced I wasn't ready to talk about my business, but who is ever ready?⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
When I graduated college, I knew I wanted to be a freelance writer and in the middle of the pandemic last year, I finally took the plunge and registered Keeping Up with the City as a bonafide business.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
I'll still continue to blog, but now I'm going to be helping other scrappy business owners develop content for their websites, blogs and social media.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
I can't believe after all these years, I am finally living out my post graduate dream of being a freelance writer. And it's all thanks to this little blog that started as just a hobby. Not to mention all the beautiful souls that have helped me along the way.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Proof that it's never too late to go after your dreams.
Shifting, changing, adjusting. It's been a long few weeks of adjusting. From a home remodel and rekindling old relationships to going back to work full-time and running a business, I wonder if I've bitten off more than I can chew.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Uprooting my entire environment wasn't as easy as I thought it would be. Even though my home was, and has been, under construction for several years, choosing to upgrade my space required a feat of trust. Trust that I would adjust, trust that this change is for my highest good, and trust that this shift was my next step towards the life I'm manifesting for myself.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Killing the self is never easy, but it's a necessary step toward progress and self actualization.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

A very happy 5th birthday to my little Charley bear.

When I adopted Charley, I was initially looking at another dog and had this pretty girl not caught my dad's eye, I'm not sure we would've ended up together.

We initially thought she was sweet and cuddly, but over the years I have learned that Charley is incredibly sensitive, rambunctious, silly, and yes, awful sweet.

To my original roommate: happy birthday. 🎂

And to the staff @kcpetproject, thank you for bringing me and this little girl together.
How 'bout them CHIEFS??? ❤️💛❤️💛

It's weird to think that about this time last year, the @chiefs were competing in the Superbowl for the first time in 50 years.

Around this time last year also marks the last few weeks of unmasked freedom before the Pandemic.

This year looks pretty different, but I'm glad to see that one thing hasn't: THE CHIEFS ARE GOING TO THE #superbowllv BABY!!! 🏈🏈🏈
